About Zanzibar

Zanzibar is an archipelago composed of islands in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of mainland Tanzania. The largest of these is Unguja, known popularly as Zanzibar. This magical place is the stuff of fairy-tales; pristine beaches, hidden forests with rare monkeys, enclaves favored by dolphins, and an ancient town with narrow, stone streets, steeped in history. The north and west sides of the Island are endless beaches with turquoise waters and coral reefs. In the southeast are continuous waves, favored by surfers and dolphin watchers.

Visitors can experience a variety of excursions: touring a spice plantation; walking through Jozani Forest; deep-sea fishing; or meet the impressive tortoises on Prison Island – some with are over 150 years old! Those who are seeking deep relaxation can enjoy a massage and sundowner drinks on the beach.

Zanzibar’s history is rich, with influence from the Arab world, Portuguese traders and neighboring India. Visitors will see intricately carved doors and beds, as well as intense spices that flavor everything from food to coffee. While Zanzibar may feel like another world, it is still very much a part of Tanzania and a not-to-be-missed part of a complete visit to this incredible country.
